A Holiday Makeup Look with Video

Oh, winter time…

Living in Florida means that for about 9 months out of the year, you walk outside and sweat immediately ensues. Now that the weather is beginning to cool down a bit, it is much more fun to actually wear a full face of makeup – and do so comfortably. With the holiday season rapidly approaching, I thought it would be great to share some of my favorite winter-inspired makeup ideas with you.

The number one tip for making sure your makeup stays put through all of your family gatherings and festivities is to use a primer before applying foundation. There are several different types including color correcting primers, illuminating primers, and pore-erasing primers. Personally, I like to use a pore minimizing primer (such as Benefit Porefessional) on my t-zone and apples of my cheeks, and use a redness erasing primer (like Maybelline Master Prime) on the perimeters of my face.

Foundation can make or break your entire makeup look, depending if it is the correct shade and the perfect type for your skin tone. If you have more oily skin, I recommend sticking with foundations with a matte or natural finish. If you have dry skin, you can use a foundation with either a dewy or natural finish. Over the course of a day, my skin becomes more oily, so I prefer a matte finish foundation like Maybelline Fit Me Matte & Poreless.

After finishing my foundation, I always apply concealer to my under eye area. One of my favorites is Maybelline Instant Age Rewind. Concealer acts to cover up any discoloration or bags under the eyes – which is extremely beneficial after a long night preparing for holiday fun! Next, I set my under eyes and the rest of my face with a powder to give a flawless finish to the skin. This also helps to minimize the shine of my skin throughout the day.

To give the face definition and shape, I contour with Wet n’ Wild’s Contour palette below my cheekbones and along the edges of my forehead (near the hairline). Be sure to blend completely in order to avoid a clear line between foundation and contour. Bronzer gives a natural sun kissed glow to the face, which is why I find it most helpful during the winter months when I am hardly ever out in the sun. I apply my bronzer in the same general areas as the contour powder.

Highlight has become one of the most loved aspects of makeup, and I have to say that I am definitely on board with this trend. I am obsessed with Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Opal because it gives the perfect rose gold glow to the skin. I apply highlight on the highest portion of my cheek bones, as well as down the bridge of my nose, and on my Cupid’s bow (the center area above your top lip).

Eyebrows are an essential in my makeup routine. I love to add a bit of definition to my brows, without making them look completely drawn-on. I accomplish my perfect natural-looking brow with Anastasia’s Brow Powder, and then top it off with NYX Tinted Brow Mascara.

Eye makeup is the place where your true creativity can shine through. No matter what shades you decide to use, always remember that the key to applying eye shadow is to blend, blend, and blend some more! This eliminates harsh lines to give the eye makeup a softer look. Eyeliner can be a struggle for some, including myself. I usually only apply eyeliner occasionally, and I prefer a liquid like Revlon ColorStay Skinny Liquid Liner. This gives me a precise line because of the thin tip on the applicator. Mascara is my number one must have! My new favorite mascara is Loreal Telescopic in Carbon Black. This mascara gives substantial length while adding volume, without causing my lashes to clump together. I have no issues with this mascara flaking off throughout the day, and it has one of the most comfortable formulas I have tried.

I enjoy playing around with different lip colors to mix up my makeup look. For the holiday season, I absolutely recommend a red shade. Reds are so festive and scream Christmas-time! One of the most beautiful shades of red that I have is MAC’s Dubonnet. It is just the perfect shade of deep red, without being too bright.

These are some products that I hold near and dear to my heart, and I enjoy using during the holiday season. We all have different preferences – as well as different skin types – so all of these products may not be ideal for everyone. I encourage all of you who are interested in makeup to give it a try and have fun! You can always wipe off the makeup afterwards for a fresh face. You are all beautiful with and without these products, so just do as you please and do not let others dim your light!

With Love, Jeni
